Facebook has presented an open source camera project, a design and software for a 360 degree VR camera available free of charge. Facebook itself will not develop or sell this camera.

The design of the camera and the software necessary will be published on GitHub open source platform.

The dish-shaped camera includes seventeen cameras: fourteen along the edge, two fish-eye lens below and one above.

According to Facebook, the design solves some problems early 360-degree cameras had.

The camera can record at resolutions up to 8K, and can be operational for many hours  without overheating. The result is suitable for the Oculus Rift, Gear VR and the Facebook app.

Facebook hopes that both businesses and hobbyists will build their own cameras. For only $ 30,000 you can buy all materials needed. 🙂
